Pelion in March: The Symphony of the Orchards and Wild Herbs | Aeolos

While the Aegean remains a deep, quiet blue, the mountain above Chorefto is currently undergoing a radical transformation. March in Pelion is not about the heat of the sun, but the power of the earth. As we prepare the gardens at Aeolos Hotel & Villas for our May opening, the surrounding landscape is exploding with life that most summer tourists never get to see.

If you are a nature photographer, a botany enthusiast, or a fan of authentic agritourism, this is the "Secret Season" of the Centaurs.

1. The White Sea: Zagora’s Apple Blossoms

You know Zagora for its famous apples, but in March and early April, the region looks like it has been hit by a "summer snowstorm."

  • The Sight: Thousands of apple and cherry trees bloom simultaneously, covering the slopes in white and pale pink.

  • Pro Tip: This is the best time for drone photography. The contrast between the white blossoms on the mountain and the deep blue Aegean below is a signature Pelion image.

2. Foraging: The Kitchen of the Forest

In March, the locals aren`t in the sea; they are in the forest with baskets.

  • Wild Asparagus (Avronies): These thin, bitter, and delicious spears grow wild in the brambles around Chorefto. They are a delicacy served in local taverns with eggs.

  • Nettle & Greens: This is the season for Hortopita (wild green pie). The mountain is a literal supermarket of iron-rich greens like wild spinach and nettles.

3. The Sound of Running Water

Because the snow is still melting on the peaks of Chania, March is the only time you can hear the "Secret Waterfalls."

  • Hidden Gems: Small streams that are dry in August become rushing torrents in March. The hiking trail from Chorefto to Pouri features several seasonal crossings where the water literally flows into the sea.

  • The Experience: The air is highly oxygenated and carries the scent of damp earth and crushed mint.

Why this matters for your May visit?

By the time we welcome you in May, these blossoms will have turned into tiny green fruits, and the wild herbs will have reached their peak fragrance. Planning your trip now allows you to witness the tail-end of this greenery while enjoying the first warm swimming days of the year.
