Easter in Pelion: A Journey of Light, Tradition, and Wildflowers | Aeolos
As the bells of the historic churches in Zagora and Tsagarada echo across the green slopes this April, Pelion is draped in its most spiritual atmosphere. This week, Greece celebrates Easter and in Pelion, this tradition is inseparable from the blooming nature that surrounds us.
While we are busy with the final preparations to welcome you to Aeolos Hotel & Villas this May, we invite you to take a virtual walk through the stone-paved alleys of the "Mountain of the Centaurs" during this sacred time.

1. The Epitaphios: A Path of Incense and Spring Flowers
On Good Friday, the atmosphere in the mountain villages is hauntingly beautiful. In Zagora, just minutes from our hotel, the Epitaphios (the symbolic tomb of Christ) is decorated with thousands of hand-picked wildflowers from the Pelion slopes.
-
The Experience: Unlike the city, here the procession moves through ancient stone paths (kalderimia). The smell of incense mixes with the scent of wild gardenias and damp earth.
2. Holy Saturday: Light Over the Aegean
The Resurrection of Christ (Anastasi) at midnight on Saturday is a spectacle of light. From the balconies of Chorefto, you can see the flickering candles (the "Holy Light") traveling from the village squares down to the sea.
-
The Sight: Fireworks illuminate the dark Aegean waters, signaling that the "quiet" of winter is officially over.
-
Local Insight: This is the night everyone enjoys Magiritsa, a traditional herb-rich soup that prepares the stomach for the feast to come.
3. Easter Sunday: The Great Feast
Easter Sunday in Pelion is a sensory explosion. The sound of traditional music fills the air, and the smell of roasting lamb wafts through every village square.
-
The Gastronomy: This is the day of "Ovelias" (lamb on the spit). It is a day of community, where visitors and locals share wine and "Tsoureki" (sweet Easter bread).
-
The energy of Easter Sunday marks the beginning of the summer season. By the time Aeolos Hotel opens in May, the festive spirit has transitioned into the calm, welcoming hospitality of the Greek summer.
